His hat has fallen on the railway line, almost certain to be crushed - and he is in imminent danger of joining it. From ‘The Boy’s Own Paper’ 1879-80, a British newspaper for boys which was at that time published by the Religious Tract Society and which featured stories, heroic deeds, facts, educational items and illustrations. The Prioress, a character in "The Canterbury Tales", a collection of stories written by Geoffrey Chaucer at the end of the 14th century and 'told' by a group of pilgrims on their way to the shrine of St Thomas à Becket at Canterbury Cathedral, Kent. This series of illustrations is from "Chaucer's Canterbury Tales", edited by John Saunders, publ. J.M. Dent & Co, 1889, and are based on those in the Ellesmere Manuscript. (Now in the public domain.) This image depicts the survival of a sole Mamluk (a slave soldier) who forced his horse to leap from the walls of the Citadel in Cairo to escape the massacre of hundreds of other Mamluks by Muhammad Ali in 1811. The book is an entertaining account of the types of characters to be found upon the theatre stage and this is the ‘stage child’. It is prettily-featured, clean, engaging, generally too good to be true - until it is in its stage ‘home’ and then it can be quite horrid. The book is an entertaining account of the types of characters to be found upon the theatre stage and this shifty-looking individual is the ‘stage villain’. Of course, you would know that from his immaculate appearance and the fact that he is always smoking a cigarette. Things which would never happen in real life, naturally.
